Topographic and bathimetric survey of the basin of “Don Luigi Sturzo dam” in Ogliastro district, Aidone and Ramacca territory in the province of Enna and Catania

The project

A survey and topographic-bathymetric representation of the reservoir of Lake Ogliastro and of a contour band that can contain the maximum height of the basin were carried out, as well as the planimetric and altimetric survey of the “Don Luigi Sturzo Dam” structure. The surveys - conducted on the ground through GPS and traditional instrumentation and the ones in the water through the combined use of GPS and sonar equipment Singlebeam - have allowed the overall representation of the basin (emerged and submerged) in its present state, and its comparison with the project, namely the calculation of storage capacity and the calculation of the volumes of the sediment between pre-and post-works. Overall, approx. 715 Ha. were surveyed - for a total perimeter of almost 19 km - of which 635 Ha. through bathymetric surveys and the remaining 80 hectares, through ground topographic surveys. The 80 hectares effected by ground surveys concern, not only the structure of the “Don Luigi Sturzo” dam in detail but also the wet perimeter of the reservoir and contour boundary that holds the maximum part of the lake basin. For the execution of the above work 3 teams were engaged for a total of 6 topographical surveyors who have used both GPS and traditional instrumentation. Specifically, 6 GPS were used for real Time Kinematic and 2 motorized total stations with pole remote control. The bathymetric surveys were carried out by a specialized BATINI-Survey team composed of 4 operators and carried through the combined use of a single echo sonar Single Beam type and a global positioning GPS system with GPS-RTK differential correction managed by a specific navigation and data acquisition software. The purpose of the surveys was the overall representation of the basin (emerged and submerged) in its present state, and the comparison with the project, ie the calculation of storage capacity and the calculation of the volumes of sediment between pre and post work.

Technical difficulties

L’enorme quantità di dati scaturita da tutta la strumentazione utilizzata – sia topografica che batimetrica – anche in virtù della grande estensione rilevata (ca.715 Ha.), nonché dalle acquisizioni al secondo (1 punto rilevato ogni secondo) della strumentazione batimetrica, sono state egregiamente gestite dalla piattaforma SierraSoft, senza dover ricorrere a fastidiose lottizzazioni dei dati rilevati. The enormous amount of data flowing from all the instrumentation used - both topographic and bathymetric - even under the great extension surveyed (ca.715 ha.), as well as from the acquisitions per second (1 point surveyed every second) of the bathymetric instrumentation, were well managed by the Sierrasoft platform, without having to resort to annoying subdivisions of the data collected. The great versatility of Topko’s subprojects allowed the smooth management of the whole process of restitution and calculation, not least the assembly of the surveys from various instruments that were used. The DTM analysis of Topko Premium easily allowed the rapid process of complex and extended mathematical models used for the comparison and the calculation of the volumes of sediment in the lake basin from the state of the project till today. The features of Topko Premium are so accurate in details that have allowed for the addition of personality and color in the drawing up of the project.
